History

Buyus Funeral Home was a second generation funeral home owned by the Buyauskas family for 42 years. During the later years, the name became as it is known today. This was a long, and well established funeral home, serving primarily the Lithuanian Community. In 1963, Mario Teixeira, Jr. acquired the Funeral Home, and today it is run by the Teixeira Family. The Newark Ironbound Section has always been a "melting pot" of many diverse ethnic groups, including Irish, Polish, Italian, Lithuanian, Portuguese, Spanish, etc. Our objective was to reach out and serve the "Ironbound Community". These efforts were successful, for today, we serve an entire cross section of this community.

Shaw-Buyus Home for Services, located in Kearny, NJ (Hudson County) was acquired in 1980. Once acquired, the name was changed to "SHAW-BUYUS HOME FOR SERVICES"; this name change was made to link the two homes together, since many Ironbound families were relocating to the Kearny, NJ area.

Rucki Funeral Home on Pulaski St in Newark, (just around the corner, some three blocks) became available. This was a three generation funeral home that served the Polish Community. Negotiations were made, and in 1986, the name and phone number of the Funeral Home was acquired. The Rucki Funeral Home address was changed to Lafayette St. and has since functioned as a dual operation of Buyus Funeral Home and Rucki Funeral Home at the same address. In 2006, Rucki Funeral Home was Merged with the Bernauer Funeral Home.

The Bernauer Funeral Home, located in the Ironbound Section of Newark, has served the German-American Community for many years; in 1987, it celebrated 100 years of funeral service to its Community, by three generations of the Bernauer family. The funeral home was acquired in 1988. It functioned as an independent funeral home until, in 2005, the funeral home was sold, and relocated to Lafayette St. (Buyus Funeral Home). In 2006 it was merged with the Rucki Funeral Home. It currently is operating as the Rucki-Bernauer Funeral Home at the Lafayette St. address.

Our family of funeral homes, Buyus Funeral Home, Shaw-Buyus Home for Services, and Rucki-Bernauer Funeral Home, have over 259 combined years of service to the communities that they serve, and a combined total of 111 years under our ownership. Our facilities are thoroughly handicap accessible and serve all who call. The Ironbound section of Newark has remained a multi-lingual community, and in our desire to properly serve our families, every effort is made to communicate in their language. Portuguese and Spanish are spoken fluently at our funeral homes.
