Obituary for Henry "Hank" Martinez

Henry “Hank” Martinez, 82, was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey. Beloved husband of Merinda N. Martinez (nee Lopez); Loving father of Daniel Martinez, Carolann Latorre, Michael A. Peral, L. Michele Guarneri and husband Marcello; Dear brother of Inez Masucci and the late Dave Martinez. Also, survived by 10 grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews and a niece.

Hank served in the U.S. Army and was a Specialist overseas and was Honorably Discharged. In 1960, he served as officer in the Crime Prevention Unit and retired as a Sergeant in 1986. Hank was a graduate of the FBI Narcotics Program was named Policeman of the Year in 1971. Hank was also an Essex County Under Sheriff. He was proud to have been a member of the Police Honor Legion, Newark’s FOP, PBA, the SOA and Director of the Blue Knights of Newark Chapter NJ IV.

Hank was a graduate of Harvard University’s nationally acclaimed program for Senior Executive’s in Local and State Government. He studied at Drake’s Business College and Law through the LaSalle University Extension Division. From 1974-1998, Hank served as Newark’s East Ward Councilman and was elected Newark Municipal Council President in 1986. He also served as Vice Chairman and Commissioner of the North Jersey District Water Supply Commission. He was elected as an Essex County Freeholder, District 1, and was re-elected in 1999. Hank served as Chairman of Newark’s East Ward Democratic Committee and was also the President of the Hank Martinez Association.

Among his many affiliation’s, he was a member of the Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus, the Ironbound Executives Association, the Red Shield Boy’s and Girl’s Club, member of the Board of Directors for FOCUS and the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. In 1982, he received the” Man of the Year Award” from the Salvation Army Boy’s and Girl’s Club. In 1983 he received the Ironbound Rotary Award for “Outstanding Citizen of the Year”.

Relatives and friends are welcome to attend the Funeral Mass on Tuesday, March 13 at 10 am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Newark. Cremation Private.

Visitation for Hank will be held on Monday, March 12 from 4 -8 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Heart Association and American Cancer Society would be graciously appreciated.
